Ry's Report 5

Dad and I heading into the mill
At the Sugar Mill first we watched a movie and then put on our helmets, glasses, ear plugs and special vests. Once we were ready we went into the factory and saw the bigcarriages tip 2 tonnes of cane onto a conveyor belt. After that we walk further into the factory and it really stunk. We saw all the sugar juice getting pounded out, we also saw all the left over sugar dirt on a big roller and Taj ate some. He said it was yum. The next part was seeing some molasses and we got to try some. I didn’t try any. They showed us other big machines and all the steps to making sugar. At the end we went and saw the raw sugar on a conveyor belt ready to be shipped off. A man then gave us a handful each of the sugar. Straight away Taj shoved his face into it and scoffed it. It was yum, but I only ate a little bit of it. We then saw thesugar crystals in the molasses. Everyone then left but Taj and I stayed back to watch more sugar cane getting dumped out of the carriages. At the end of the tour we went back and got to have an afternoon tea.

At the Sugar Mill I learnt that the sugar cane gets transported by a special train which goes all around the region. The sugar cane can be just cut or burnt. The farmers who burn it do it to get rid of all the hiding animals in the crop.

At Mackay we watched Dave’s footy at a nice ground that had plovers that were attacking people.  There was a sandpit that was really cool because it was just sand that had been dumped into one big place.  At  half time we went on to the oval and played marks up.  I made a new friend Tyler, and he asked me if I wanted to play for his team.  I said maybe but then it turned out that they didn’t have another game the next week and I would have to play under 13’s so mum and dad said no.  In the end Dave’s team lost by about 100 points.

Mac and Disco

Dave and Robyn have three kids, their names are Mac, Jordyn and Cobin.  Their house was really big and nice.  They have a bird called Speckles but Dad and I were the only ones who could pat him on the head.  There were three dogs Apollo, Lucy and Chick. I was the only kid who didn’t get bitten by Lucy.  Taj and Tamsyn were a bit rough around her face.  They also had one cat that was really, really, really big.  His name was Disco.  Disco always brings snakes and rats to the front door.  We caught two geckos and they were really cool.  They were really fast and much bigger than the ones that I used to have as pets.  We caught crickets for them.  Robyn has a nice pool that we swam in two times.  There are two skate parks in Mackay.  One was the worst we’ve seen and the other one is probably the best we’ve seen so far.  Cobin and I played the Wi a lot.  We played a game where you could play four different sports.  We also liked to connect on DS.  Mac was my special friend because she used to like to follow me around and she would always sit next to me in the car or at the table.

We went to the blue water lagoon.  It had three pools and one playground.  The playground has a big bucket and lots of other cool stuff.  One of the big pools has a slide but it wasn’t open because they only open it in the school holidays.  There was one pool that wasn’t that deep and another that was for older kids.  The third pool was for adults or really good swimmers.  You can go in there for free.

We went to a movie called Red Dog, it was really sad.  We all cried at the end.  I thought the movie was a bit sad and I didn’t like it very much.  It was an Australian movie and it was based on a real story.  We are going to go and see the statue of Red Dog when we get to Western Australia.

  1. Hi Ry!
I think that I went on that same tour of the mill when I was in Mackay!!! (That was a long long time ago, I think I was about 18)!
The water park looks great but why does Taj look super-grumpy??
    Great writing!
